Special Menorah Lighting & Celebration at DOCO Plaza for First Day of Hanukkah on December 22

Sacramento, Calif. – On Sunday, December 22, the community is invited to attend a special menorah lighting and celebration at DOCO (Downtown Commons) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  In partnership with Chabad of Sacramento, and with Mayor Darrell Steinberg on-site to show support, the menorah lighting will be conducted by Rabbi Mendy Cohen to honor and celebrate the first night of Hanukkah. After the ceremonial lighting, guests can enjoy free live music, a balloon artist and face painter for children, giveaways and kosher refreshments. In addition, interested guests are encouraged to bring a gift donation for Shriner’s Hospital for Children (a suggested list of needed items is available on the DOCO website).

For optimal viewing, the community is encouraged to gather on the West Plaza of the DOCO’s main level near Macy’s. The family-friendly activities will take place immediately following the lighting ceremony.

Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish celebration – often referred to as the “festival of lights” – that is observed by lighting the candles of a menorah for eight successive nights. Each night, one additional candle is lit by a shamash – the “attendant candle” that is used to kindle the other lights – until all eight candles are lit together on the final night.

Centrally located in the heart of downtown Sacramento, DOCO was developed in partnership by JMA Ventures and the Sacramento Kings. The thriving outdoor plaza is a must-visit entertainment, shopping and lifestyle destination that showcases some of the very best the city has to offer in terms of retailers, bars, restaurants, office space and more. Guests can enjoy shopping at a fantastic mix of retailers, indulging at amazing restaurants, bars and eateries, and being part of engaging events and activities that help to make DOCO a dynamic community gathering place.

All DOCO activities are subject to change based on weather and other conditions. For more detailed information about DOCO and a suggested list of needed items for Shriner’s Hospital for Children, please visit DOCOSacramento.com.
